The slalom championship starts the weekend before in Bière, but only the slalom in Frauenfeld will give an indication of the new balance of power. Around 400 participants have registered for the two days of car racing on the Frauenfeld Allmend, 250 LOC and REG licensed for Saturday, 130 national plus 20 more LOC/REG drivers from the Abarth Trofeo and the Corvette Club for Sunday. The ACS Thurgau as organizer is looking forward especially to the 14 racing cars. As in 2015, the favorite for the day's victory is Philip Egli from Zurich in the Dallara F3.
Test of strength of the champions in the OPC Challenge
Defending champion Martin Bürki is making a first move by competing in the 1400cc class with the small E1 Polo of last year's multiple winner Beat Rohr and leaving the 1600cc class to his equally fast son Mike in the second E1 Polo from MB Motorsport. Bürki has earmarked his own championship car for Bière and Interlaken.
The 2016 OPC Challenge with the new Opel Corsa OPC looks set to become a true showdown of champions. At the season opener in Frauenfeld, no fewer than eight former Swiss champions or Cup winners will be in action: defending champion Marcel Muzzarelli, perennial challenger Thierry Kilchenmann, Fabio Gubitosi, Daniel Kammer, Edy Kobelt, Jakob Morgenegg, Jürg Strasser and Werner Wermelinger.
