According to the Swiss Motorcycle and Scooter Agency, new registrations exploded in the first half of 2021, especially for motorcycles.
Notwithstanding the pandemic-related supply problems of some manufacturers and the lousy early summer weather, 23,830 new motorcycles (+36.0 %) were put on the market from January to June, more than ever before.
Top of the displacement segments
The 125 cc motorcycle class, whose models limited to 15 hp (11 kW) engine power have now been open to 16-year-old starters in Switzerland since 2021, has taken the lead in the various displacement segments with 5460 new motorcycles registered.
Scooters, which are predominantly used in urban areas and help to ease traffic congestion, also posted strong growth of 10,883 units (+26.9 %). The overall market rose by 32.6 % to 36,097 units.
Clear trend toward private transport
motosuisse association president Jörg Bucher: "Never before have motorcycles and scooters been so popular and so strongly represented in Switzerland across all age and income groups as they are today. The pandemic situation has further accelerated the trend away from public transport to private transport."
All-time record in sight for the current year
According to the industry association motosuisse, a new all-time record for total new registrations (previously 50,211 units in 2000) could be set at the end of the year.
A new record for motorcycles is also within reach: at 23,830 units after the first six months of 2021, they are not far off the previous year's best figure (29,450 units).
