Boundless jubilation: Tom Lüthi (center) and his team celebrate the successful start to the season.

The Moto2 season could not have got off to a more exciting start: Lüthi got off to a lightning start, taking second place on the second lap behind pole man and last year's winner Jonas Folger. The 29-year-old also benefited indirectly from his rivals' drive-through penalties during the course of the race. Among others, this also affected compatriot Robin Mulhauser.

After the leader Folger crashed unchallenged into the gravel on the fourth of 20 laps, a duel for victory developed between Tom Lüthi and Franco Morbidelli. As an experienced rider, Lüthi benefited from his experience and delivered a thriller for the spectators. He only overtook Morbidelli at the start of the last lap and crossed the finish line as the winner.

Aegerter finishes fifth
The shock for Morbidelli came after crossing the finish line. He and Sandro Cortese were also penalized for a false start, but with a 20-second penalty instead of a drive-through penalty. As a result, Morbidelli dropped back to 7th place and Cortese to 15th.

The 25-year-old Dominique Aegerter, who battled throughout the weekend and had set himself a high target for Sunday, also benefited from the early starts and positioned himself in fifth place. Swiss riders Jesko Raffin and Robin Mulhauser clearly missed out on the points.

The next round of Moto2 will take place on April 3rd in Argentina.
