Market: Strong boom with bikes despite crisis
LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL Mr. and Mrs. Swiss love motorcycles: In 2020, 21,833 motorcycles were sold from January to July, which is 2778 units more than in the same period last year. The slump caused by the lockdown lasting several weeks is a thing of the past thanks to respectable sales in May, June and July. By mid-June, dealers had made up for the massive drop in sales during the key sales months of March and April.
In July, registration figures exceeded those of the same month of the previous year by 4233 compared with 2764 units. A total of 21,833 motorcycles of all displacement and power classes were newly registered.
Rising sales also for scooters
The figures for scooters are not quite as sensational, but thanks to strong sales months in June and July, the previous year's result was also exceeded.
Exactly 11,360 compared with 11,265 units in the first seven months of the previous year show a slight increase.
2020 last year for direct entry
One of the main reasons for the boom is the elimination of direct entry to large motorcycles from 2021. 2020 will be the last year in which more than 25-year-olds in Switzerland will be allowed to get directly onto a large motorcycle with unlimited power. After that, all regardless of age must first complete two years on a motorcycle limited to 48 hp (35 kW).
But the pandemic-related trend away from public transport to private transport also plays an important role. Broad sections of the population are increasingly using motorized two-wheelers not only as a hobby, but also as a commercial vehicle and means of transport that also offers optimum protection against infection.
