May, which is particularly important for sales, did not live up to its name and was cold and rainy throughout. Nevertheless, the market remained at a consistently high level.
High-capacity motorcycles with more than 750 cm3 (4515 units) or even more than 1000 cm3 (5319) continue to be the most popular among Swiss customers. In 2018, they accounted for more than half of all new registrations (9834). The third strongest segment is machines with a displacement of 500 to 750 cm3 (3217).
Retro look offers new worlds of experience
The trend is still towards motorcycles that combine an attractive, cool retro look with modern technology and thus follow the urban trend towards lifestyle and new worlds of experience and adventure. This development, which is less focused on absolute performance values, will continue.
Few opportunities for purely electric bikes
Electric technology still has no chance with motorcycles: 76 new registrations (previous year: 73) correspond to a market share of only 0.5 %. The reasons for this are not due to a lack of acceptance of electrical technology, but are of a technical nature.
The industry is not yet able to offer any mature, attractive and affordable solutions for two-wheelers, which only offer limited space. The same applies to scooters, which are mainly used in urban areas: 592 newly registered e-scooters correspond to only 6.6 % of new scooter registrations in the first six months.
