Manuel Amweg: Back on the Nordschleife
COMEBACK WITH TOYOTA Due to Toyota Swiss Racing's withdrawal from the VLN, GT86 Cup champions Manuel Amweg and Frédéric Yerly had to look for new cockpits for 2018. After Yerly, Amweg has now also found what he is looking for: The Aargauer will initially drive for the former rival team Milltek Sport. Frédéric Yerly and his brother-in-law Manuel Amweg would have loved to continue racing together on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. But it has not yet been possible to realize a joint project.
Yerly has known for a few weeks that he can contest some VLN races with the Honda Schmid Racing Team as partner of Roland Schmid and Roger Vögeli on the Civic TCR.
However, as the update work at JAS Motorsport in Italy is delayed, the Basel-Landschaft team has to postpone its VLN season start until the summer. VLN round 3 or 4 is planned, followed by another three to four races in the TCR class.
Deployment at last year's competitor
On the other hand, Manuel Amweg will already start at the second VLN race next Saturday, April 7, 2018. The Aargauer has found shelter at Milltek Sport.
Last year, Milltek was a strong competitor to Toyota Swiss Racing in the TMG GT86 Cup title fight. The British team has a German branch near the Nürburgring, where the VLN cars are prepared.
Manuel Amweg: "For the time being, I'm only driving VLN2 with Milltek and probably the 24-hour race. They have modified their Toyota GT86 for the SP3 class, installed a large tank and a sequential gearbox. Although I would like to move to a higher class, I am happy to be back in this way. We'll see what happens after this."
Manuel Amweg, the younger brother of Thomas Amweg, who drives a Lola F3000 in Swiss hillclimb races, won the TMG GT86 Cup twice in the VLN. In 2016 with Thomas Lampert as his partner, in the previous year with Frédéric Yerly.
