As fourth in Saturday's qualifying race, Edoardo Mortara had to put himself on the second row of the grid in his Mercedes-AMG GT3. Not a particularly good starting position on a street circuit where safe overtaking is practically only possible at one point - at the end of the long straight before the notorious Lisboa Bend.

In the only FIA GT World Cup race scheduled for 18 laps, the front runners led by pole setter Augusto Farfus on BMW M6 maintained their positions. When Raffaele Marciello (an Italian born in Zurich) missed the braking point on the approach to the Lisboa corner, the BMW driver was rid of his worst rival.

Farewell to Charly Lamm
Lying in 2nd and 3rd place, Maro Engel, the 2015 and 2016 winner, and Edoardo Mortara put pressure on the leader in their Mercedes. However, there was no decisive opportunity for an overtaking maneuver. So Farfus brought his BMW M6 safely to the finish, giving retiring Schnitzer team boss Charly Lamm the finest parting gift.

With a gap of 0.981 seconds, Engel finally crossed the finish line in second place, closely followed by Mortara. The Geneva native has already scored two wins in Formula 3 and four with GT3 cars from Audi and Mercedes in Macau.

A quiet disappointment
That Edo had the speed for his seventh Macau triumph was proven by his fastest race lap. That's why the Swiss is slightly disappointed despite the podium. After all, the chance to win an FIA title doesn't come along every day.

Edoardo Mortara: "Third place is not a bad result in itself. But of course you always want to achieve more. Congratulations to BMW, to Augusto and to Team Schnitzer. Especially for Charly Lamm, this is a great thing."
