Slalom terrain in Ambri: Underneath the Gotthard, people will be driving faster this weekend than is permitted on normal Swiss roads.

How about a day trip or even a weekend trip to Ticino? Not only the weather and the southern ambience invite you to do so.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Equipe Bernoise will hold the final round of the Swiss Slalom Championship at the Ambri airfield. Spectators are admitted free of charge, and the speaker duo Bernhard Brunner/Martina Garovi, well-known from the Gurnigel mountain race, will keep them well informed throughout the day.

In sporting terms, there is still a lot at stake. Martin Bürki has the slalom title in his pocket, but four drivers are still in contention for the two other medal places in the championship on Sunday. The favorite for the day's victory is Tiziano Riva with a Reynard F3000.

Who will be champion? The two Abarth dealers Sylvain Burkhalter (left) and Beat Wyssen will decide the title between themselves on Saturday (Photo: Peter Recher).

In the Abarth Trofeo Slalom, the two Abarth dealers Beat Wyssen and Sylvain Burkhalter will decide the title between themselves on Saturday. If the man from Spiez wins with his Abarth 500 R3T from the Corsa class, he is the champion. His professional colleague from Tramelan only has a chance of winning the title if he wins again with his 695 biposto in the Abarth production car class and Wyssen takes a defeat. This only happened once in 2017.

In the Opel OPC Challenge, which holds one race each on Sunday morning and afternoon, the title is up for grabs for the young Bernese Thierry Kilchenmann. Even with a mediocre finish in one of the two slaloms, he would have the title secured. Only Fabio Gubitosi can challenge him for the title in the event of a double success.

Stephan Burri comes to Ticino as the leader of the Interswiss Trophy. But the Bernese has worse cards than the Opel Cadet drivers Jürg Ochsner and Roman Marty (Photo: Peter Wyss).

High tension prevails in the private Interswiss Trophy. With Stephan Burri (VW Polo), Jürg Ochsner (Opel Kadett 2.0), Roman Marty (Opel Kadett 2.5) and Frédéric Neff (Porsche 996 Cup) leading the standings in this order, drivers from four different classes can become champions. Marty, who unlike Burri and Ochsner can still score full points, has the best chances.
