The onboard video of Frédéric Cotting's winning drive in the Drognens slalom, supplemented with exterior shots, shows how much steering work is involved in moving a Legends Car quickly.

The Legends Cars made in the USA are based on American stock cars from the 1930s. Different silhouettes of Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford can be placed over a tubular frame chassis.

They are imported to Switzerland by the Swiss Legends Racing association, founded in 2018 and based in Wichtrach. The new price is only 19900 francs, but they can also be rented for races or track days. The active members agree that motorsport with a pure racing vehicle cannot be cheaper and more fun.

Hanspeter Sägesser and Alain Chatton founded the association and head the organization.

REG racing series for the mini runabouts
The sealed three-cylinder four-stroke engines with 847 cm3 come from a Yamaha MT09 and produce 135 hp, which is transmitted to the rigid rear axle via a sequential 6-speed reverse gearbox. With a combat weight of just 580 kilograms including the rider, the bike is a real powerhouse.

Since 2019, Swiss Legends Racing has been registered and approved by Auto Sport Schweiz as a REGional series. A valid driving license and a REG license entitle to participate. At the Swiss Slaloms, the wagons are classified in their own class in the E2 group of racing sports cars.

After victories on the circuit, Frédéric Cotting showed in Drognens that he is also good at slalom. That earned him the title (Photos: Peter Wyss).

Versatile program, soon also on the mountain?
The Legends Cars prefer to race on the Circuit de Bresse near the border in France, where the fastest lap time is scored. Auto Sport Schweiz (ASS) has nothing against track days, which generally means free sporting driving. However, it is a thorn in their side when a time is measured (time attack) with ranking for a championship.

The organizers are therefore endeavoring to find a consensus so that a varied program on the circuit and in slaloms can be maintained for 2020. In the foreseeable future, they also want to compete in hill climbs, which is currently only possible in the show program. Therefore a crash test is being prepared. If this is fulfilled, ASS can give the release for it.

Four categories of different strength
The 2019 Swiss Legends Car Cup included the rounds of the Swiss Slalom Championship in Romont, Drognens and Ambri as well as three Time Attack classifications in Bresse. All participants were divided into one of four categories: Pro (18 and over), Elite (30 and over), Master (50 and over, 2020 52 and over) and Girl Power (18 and over). A real competition took place only among the elite riders, in the other three classes there was hardly any competition.

Urs Böhlen, Frédéric Cotting and Alain Chatton (from left) were the best from the fastest and largest class.

Duel at eye level
With 26 drivers over the year and an average of eight in the six races, in which some shared a car, the elite was well staffed right from the start. In four out of five duels among former formula drivers, Frédéric Cotting prevailed over Urs Böhlen here.

The 42-year-old Düdinger was always able to gain an edge at the decisive moment on the circuit. The Bernese, who lives one kilometer from the start of the Gurnigel race, only kept the upper hand in Romont. In the second slalom on the same course, Cotting then secured the championship title with victory over Böhlen.

Good advertising in Ambri
With 13 participants, Legends Racing then gave a clear sign of life at the final round in Ambri. In the absence of the champion, Urs Böhlen won clearly in Ticino ahead of club co-founder Alain Chatton and Thomas Kräuchi, who would probably have been awarded second place with enough fuel in the tank.

Soon ASS will decide which races the Legends Cars will be officially allowed to compete in.

Waiting for approval
For 2020, increased appearances at Swiss slaloms and in France are planned. The calendar and regulations proposed by the club must be approved by ASS at the February meeting of the Sports Commission. After that, the announcement for 2020 will be published on the homepage of Swiss Legends Racing.

What is certain is that the cars will now be driven on grippy semislicks from Toyo instead of Hoosier street tires. This will make the little funmobiles significantly faster, but only marginally more expensive.
