Ticket sales for the world's biggest endurance race have long since been boosted. Now fans have an extra three months to get ready.
It was to be expected due to the increasing spread of the coronavirus around the world and the tightened travel restrictions everywhere: the 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will not take place in mid-June as planned, but on the weekend of September 19/20. This agreement was reached by the organizing Automobile Club de l'Ouest, which is also the promoter and host of the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the FIA.
Almost always in June
Since its premiere in 1923, the long-distance classic has only twice not been held in June. In 1956, it was only held in July and in 1968, due to the unrest in France, also in September. In addition, the race was not held from 1940 to 1948 due to the Second World War.
Calendar is being redesigned
The next multi-year WEC season 2020/21 was actually due to start in September. A few days ago, the 1000 Miles of Sebring was postponed from next Friday and the 6 Hours of Spa from the beginning of April to as yet unknown dates. It is quite conceivable that these will no longer be able to be held in the coming months due to a lack of free weekends and uncertainty about the course of the pandemic.
The further impact of the postponement of Le Mans on the calendar of the WEC, the European Le Mans Series, the Michelin Le Mans Cup and the new Ligier European Series is still being discussed and will be announced at a later date. The exact Le Mans schedule will also be worked out during the current enforced race break.
