Calendar 2020: There are still some races

HOPE IN SPITE OF CANCELLATIONS The Drognens slalom and Bas Monsieur will also not take place in 2020. However, Swiss drivers and fans still have a few Swiss events left. The Association des Courses Automobiles Fribourg (ACAF) held on to its slalom at the Drognens armory for a long time. With the exception of 2020, the [...]

For a long time, the Association des Courses Automobiles Fribourg (ACAF) continued to hold its slalom at the Drognens military range. With the exception of 2020, the Romont slalom is always held there in the summer.

The military has the last word
However, force majeure due to the coronavirus pandemic forced the Fribourg team to cancel the event planned for September 26/27. The date fell between the first and second week of recruit school.

However, strict hygiene and health measures apply in the military. For example, there are no visiting days or other events such as army or air shows until further notice.

It would therefore be inconsistent to authorize a sporting event on a military range. The military authorities therefore withdrew their approval for the traditional event - formerly known as the Slalom de Clôture without championship status.

Bas-Monsieur also not back until 2021
As a result, all hill climbs and slaloms registered for the Swiss Championship in the ASS calendar have been canceled for this year.

In the wake of the cancellation of Drognens, with whom the Neuchâtel team had planned to team up, Scuderia Tayfin also decided to cancel its Bas-Monsieur mini slalom on October 11, which is particularly popular with LOC and REG drivers. The 66th running of the "World Championship of the Three Corners" will therefore not take place until 2021.

First racing slalom 2020 in Alsace
However, the organizers are still holding on to two REG events. The ACS Zurich will hold its slalom on the Anneau Rhin in Alsace on August 29 according to the original schedule.

This will be part of the Lotus V6 Cup Suisse. As in Hoch-Ybrig (where there was otherwise only a slalom training session), the Suzuki riders will also take part in an internal race without Cup status.

The Squadra Mosquito slalom at the small airfield in Wangen SZ on October 25 marks the traditional end of the season. However, as with all ICSM races, only road-legal cars are generally allowed to start.

Like reportsThere will also be a slalom and a time trial on the weekend of September 12/13 in Lignières. However, this license-free club sport event will not be included in the ASS calendar.

Two historic hill climbs planned for September
But fans of hill climb races need not mope (yet). Race director Ueli Schneiter and his fellow OC board members are working on preparations for the 16th Arosa ClassicCar from September 3 to 6.

The Bernina Gran Turismo, which is also open to historic vehicles, is also scheduled to take place in the Alps from September 17 to 20. There is usually strong international participation in the field, which is limited to 80 vehicles. It remains to be seen to what extent this can still turn out in 2020 and how this will affect the event.

Plans are underway to give historic racing a stage on the Bernina (photo) and in Arosa.

St. Michael's Cross Race postponed to 2021
The hill climb from Root to Michaelskreuz high above Lake Zug and Lake Lucerne, which was planned for the first weekend in October, has also been canceled. The 6th Michaelskreuz Race for historic cars and motorcycles has been postponed to October 9/10, 2021.

In order to avoid a clash of dates with the Central Swiss, the Equipe Bernoise moved their Ambri slalom to the second weekend in October. That would have been a waste of time. The Bernese are now announcing two slalom test days for October 10 and 11, 2020, and are hoping that at least the weather in Ticino will cooperate.

Rally-SM with three runs
Swiss rally drivers can still really step on the gas at three events, two of which are to take place in Switzerland. After the delayed season opener in Morzine near the border (Rallye Mont Blanc) south-east of Geneva, the Rallye del Ticino on September 25/26 and the Rallye International du Valais from October 15-17 are on the program of the shrunken Swiss championship.

However, the calendar is provisional and should be treated with caution until the tenders are available and all the details are known. In any case, there is still hope that racing engines will still be roaring in Switzerland in late summer and fall 2020.

The Rallye du Valais is also part of the historic European Championship. Whether and how many spectators will get to see such scenes in the Sion barracks remains to be seen (Photo: Peter Wyss).
