With spectacular scenes and interviews, Hyundai Motorsport looks back on its success at the Rally Spain, with which the team secured the WRC one-make title in retrospect.
The 14th and final round of the World Rally Championship was scheduled to take place from Thursday near the region in New South Wales where catastrophic forest fires are currently raging. After consultation with the state authorities, the organizers decided to cancel the event without replacement.
The reason is primarily safety concerns. Around 1,000 officials and members of the participating teams would have been exposed to danger. In addition, the organizers also want to express their concern and sympathy after the bushfires claimed numerous lives.
Decisive triumph in Spain
Toyota works driver Ott Tänak from Estonia was already certain to be the new drivers' world champion after finishing second in Spain. The prestigious title in the manufacturers' classification was still open. This now goes to Hyundai Motorsport without a fight.
With Thierry Neuville's victory and Dani Sordo and Sébastien Loeb's 3rd and 4th places at the previous WRC round in Spain, Hyundai had extended its lead in the standings over Toyota Gazoo Racing to 18 points. Citroën and M Sport Ford were no longer in contention for the title.
The world champion moves to the world champion team
For Hyundai and the motorsport division established in 2012 in Alzenau, Germany, it is the second FIA World Championship win after the 2018 WTCR, but the first as a pure factory team.
Even before the Rally Australia, Hyundai announced the addition of Ott Tänak for the 2020 WRC, meaning that Hyundai will be stronger as the defending champions in the drivers' and manufacturers' WRC next year.
