Formula E: In one year with World Championship status

Many media - not so AutoSprintCH - keep talking about the Formula E World Championship and Formula E World Champions. In Switzerland, this was also in connection with Sébastien Buemi, the overall winner of the 2015/16 season. This was de facto incorrect, but correct in spirit. However, the electric racing series has long since earned the official world championship title, which can only be awarded by the International Automobile Federation.
From the seventh season
At their most recent meeting, the FIA and its World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) decided to continue Formula E as the FIA World Championship. The promotion of Formula E to the highest category of FIA-approved racing car formulas means that from the seventh season of 2020/21, the most competitive line-up of teams and drivers in motorsport will compete for the new ABB FIA Formula E World Championship title.
More manufacturers than in any other racing series
The announcement follows Formula E's most successful season to date - with nine different race winners and growing spectator numbers - and shortly after the first two rounds of the sixth season and the eagerly anticipated debut of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche in Saudi Arabia. No racing series has a higher participation of works cars or teams with works cars.
Jean Todt, FIA President: "Within a short space of time, the series has proven to be relevant for the automotive industry. The commitment and professionalism of now ten manufacturers and their respective teams is reflected in the quality of the driver line-up. Since the first race in Beijing in 2014 and with each subsequent E-Prix, Formula E has proven that the concept of cutting-edge electric racing works. I warmly welcome Formula E as the FIA's newest world championship."
