Formula 3: Thomas Amweg returns

STARTING IN THE DREXLER CUP Thomas Amweg is not only planning to start in the Lola F3000 at the Swiss hillclimb races in 2020, but also wants to compete again on the circuit with his F3-Dallara. Thomas Amweg is taking a two-pronged approach in 2020. He is also making changes in his family.

Except for the Jim Clark Revival 2019 in Hockenheim with the historic Ralt F2 from Phimmoracing, Thomas Amweg drove exclusively on the mountain in the last three years. With the Lola F3000, also provided by his main sponsor Hans Peter, the driver from Ammerswil achieved his first national day victory at the rainy Gurnigelrennen 2019, and he also dominated the last editions of the Arosa ClassicCar.

First wedding, then hill climb
The Lola is currently at Hunziker Motorsport, where the potent race car is receiving some updates and will then be ready for the hillclimbs. Since he wants to celebrate his wedding at the Hemberg weekend, the season start would have been planned for the cancelled home race in Reitnau.

Where it will now take place depends on the further impact of the Corona pandemic and the associated difficulties for organizers of sporting events.

Back in the Formula 3 Cup
The Aargauer achieved his first international successes in the Austria and Remus Cups, first in Formula Renault, then in Formula 3. In 2014, Amweg took the championship title in his Dallara F305-Mercedes and third place overall the following season.

After five years, he is now returning to the now renamed Drexler Automotive Formula Cup with the same car. Sebastian Vettel's father would have liked to add the car he once drove to victory in Formula 3 to his collection, but the Swiss driver has not yet been persuaded to sell it.

Thomas Amweg: "We actually always kept the car in good shape. I still think hillclimbs are nice, but I miss driving on the circuit and the family environment in this racing series."

Amweg against Zeller
As with the Lola F3000, Jo Zeller Racing is expected to assist with the chassis set-up. Sandro Zeller himself also intends to defend his title with the Dallara F312, finances permitting.

When Amweg and Zeller will meet again for the first time since 2015 (Hockenheim and Salzburgring) otherwise depends on the possibilities of holding the events foreseen in Drexler's calendar, as well as on overlaps with Swiss hill climbs. Due to the assembly ban imposed in Öst erreich on April 6 until the end of June, the season opener in Spielberg planned for mid-May is not possible.

Thomas Amweg: "We would have liked to start at the Red Bull Ring in mid-May. Now we just hope that we can start at the Salzburgring in July. After that, I'm planning one or two races in the fall at Brno or Monza. Let's wait and see - we'll be ready."
