The 19-year-old driver is thus entering into a partnership with Sauber Motorsport, the Swiss team that has been competing in Formula 1 for more than 25 years and is enrolled in the premier class of motorsport in 2019 as Alfa Romeo Racing.
Scherer laid the foundation for his promotion to FIA Formula 3 with strong performances in the 2018 European Formula 3 Series and with his victories in Formula 4 in 2016/2017.
Chances for promotion to Formula 1
The Sauber Junior Team is unique in international motorsport because it offers young racing drivers an opportunity to progress within a team from Formula 4 to Formula 1.
The support program is run in collaboration with Charouz Racing System, a team that won victories and championship titles in Formula 2 and Formula 4 last season. Fabio Scherer, who is sponsored by the Swiss company Stobag, gets full support from both Sauber and Charouz - on and off the track.
The Sauber Junior Team is one of 10 teams participating in the FIA Formula 3 Series. The championship will compete in eight Formula 1 Grands Prix as part of the supporting program.
An important step in the career
Fabio Scherer: "The opportunity to drive for the Sauber Junior Team is an important step in my career. And I am determined to make the most of this opportunity. It requires a lot of work on my part, but if I do my best and people believe in me, then a lot is possible. My rookie season in Formula 3 last year was very solid. I feel ready to take this challenge by the horns."
Bob Vavrik, Managing Director of Charouz Racing System, doubles down: "We are looking forward to working with Fabio. And to support him in his debut in the FIA F3 Championship as part of the Sauber Junior program. He is a driver who is blessed with a lot of natural talent and seems very determined."
Develop successful skills
Frédéric Vasseur, CEO of Sauber Motorsport and Team Principal of Alfa Romeo Racing: "The Sauber Junior Team takes the 2019 season under its wheels with a strong line-up in the FIA Formula categories F2, F3 and F4. The aim of our project is to pass on our experience to young drivers and provide a platform that gives them the opportunity to successfully develop their skills so they can get closer to their dream of a great career."
First preseason test in France
Fabio will get a taste of FIA Formula 3 at the first preseason test at Circuit Paul Ricard in France on March 20 and 21. He will then do further testing in Barcelona (April 9 and 10) and at the Hungaroring (April 17 and 18) for further preparation.
