Formula 3: Sandro Zeller ahead of the title
TWO MORE WINS Sandro Zeller also had his few opponents clearly under control at the Lausitzring. The Zurich driver underlined his ambitions to win the Remus Formula 3 Cup title again with his participation alone. Only six drivers from Formula 3 and three from Formula Renault took part in Races 9 and 10 to the Remus Formula Cups at the Lausitzring. After all, Andrea Cola was the only Italian on the grid - and he was then Sandro Zeller's toughest opponent.
Cola, however, was not able to unsettle him. With his self-prepared Dallara F306-VW under the promotion of Jo Zeller Racing, the son of the x-time Swiss racing car champion marked the fastest practice time for both runs.
Sandro Zeller converted these into two unchallenged start/finish victories. Cola finished second in his newer Dallara F312-Mercedes, around twelve seconds behind in each case.
Two third places for Marcel Tobler
Because Kurt Böhlen as well as Antonino Pellegrino and Urs Rüttimann decided not to take part in the East German event near Dresden, only Marcel Tobler as the second Swiss Formula 3 driver was still part of the small field. The driver from Thurgau finished both races in a good third place in the Dallara F308-Mercedes, which is also run by Jo Zeller Racing.
In the first run, Cola was only able to distance him by two seconds, and in the second run over 25 minutes, Tobler's life was made difficult by the failed fifth gear. But he saved the last place on the podium with a five-second lead over the fastest of the three German pilots.
Sandro Zeller is practically champion
With two events still to go in Imola (July 28/29) and Brno (September 8/9), Sandro Zeller has a 100-point lead over Andrea Cola - as many as are still up for grabs. So, as in 2017, Zeller has the title as good as in the bag.
In the Horag Swiss Formula 3 Cup, too, only Marcel Tobler can theoretically knock him off the top spot.
Swiss lead in Formula Renault
In Formula Renault, Switzerland's Adrian Knapp and Florian Münger were beaten in the first race by Germany's Oliver Stark, who was competing for the first time. The latter also won clearly ahead of Knapp in the second race, which Münger missed due to a broken drive shaft on the formation lap.
In the championship, however, Münger is still ahead of Stephan Glaser, who was absent in Lausitz. One of the two Swiss will probably take this sub ranking.
