On the way to the top: Fabio Scherer is the only rider in the field to represent the Swiss colors.

In the past two years, Fabio Scherer has been one of the fastest youngsters in ADAC Formula 4. In 2018, the 18-year-old from Lucerne will join the FIA Formula 3 with the German Motopark team, where he will be the first Swiss to fight for European Championship points and the rookie title in many years.

During two two-day official pre-season tests at the Hungaroring and Spielberg, Scherer was able to familiarize himself with the team and his car - a Dallara F317-Volkswagen. In terms of lap times, he was always in the midfield. A third and final test will take place at Misano on April 10/11.

Satisfied with first location determination
In both tests, the only Swiss in the field of 24 drivers from 15 nations was able to complete a number of laps and thus make an initial assessment of his position. The former ASS Award winner is satisfied with the progress made so far, which makes him optimistic for the coming season.

Fabio Scherer: "It's always difficult to say where you stand during testing. You never know what set-up the competition is running with, plus the track conditions are constantly changing. I don't think I've had the chance to show what I and the car are made of yet, but the feeling is that I'm somewhere in the top 10."

Until the FIA Formula 3 European Championship - the last season with the familiar naturally aspirated two-liter race cars - starts on the Pau city circuit from May 11 to 13, Scherer still has some time to develop his driving skills.

Fabio Scherer: "I've really learned a lot since I joined Motopark. The confidence in the car is there and the relationship with my team is very good. I can certainly find a bit more speed when everything fits together. Of course, there are always a few things you can do even better. But if we keep working like this, I don't see any problems."

Companion: The commitment of the three Swiss companies is clearly visible on Scherer's Dallara.

Support from three international Swiss brands
With Stobag AG (which stands for Storen-Bau Gattikon), ATS-Tanner AG from Zug (packaging technology) and the watch brand Eterna (which once accompanied Walter Brun and Brun Motorsport on their way to winning the 1986 World Team Championship in Group C), Fabio Scherer fortunately has three Swiss companies behind him that support him in motor racing.

Because many other young Swiss drivers often complain about the lack of support from their own country, this may also be mentioned here in praise.
