In a solemn ceremony on Monday evening, FIA President Jean Todt received all the World Endurance Champions from 1981 to 1992 and from the modern era of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) launched in 2012. Most of them have also won one or more times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
First Formula 1 and World Rally Championship, now Endurance
Together with the drivers who have since died, such as the unforgettable Stefan Bellof, their names will be included in a newly established FIA Hall of Fame. A year ago, this honor was bestowed on the 33 Formula 1 world champions and the 17 rally champions.
The 29 Endurance Champions include Sébastien Buemi, Marcel Fässler and Neel Jani. All triumphed with their factory teams, whose team principals Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Audi), Fritz Enzinger (Porsche) and Pascal Vasselon (Toyota) will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame, at Le Mans as well.
Three Swiss Le Mans winners and world champions
Fässler made a start in 2011 and repeated this with Audi in 2012 (World Champion) and 2014. Although Sébastien Buemi clinched the WEC title with Toyota in 2014, he only won at Le Mans in 2018 and 2019 and thus came to his second WEC crown this year. In between, Neel Jani achieved the double with Le Mans and WEC title with Porsche in 2016. They are thus the first Swiss in the Hall of Fame and were present in Paris.
