Finishing fifth in qualifying, Jaap van Lagen showed in Hungary that he is again ready to be among the frontrunners after setbacks in the previous Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup races.
Thanks to a brilliant start, the Dutchman overtook two rivals at the Hungaroring in the Porsche 991 GT3 Cup entered by Fach Auto Tech and took third place after the first corner.
Tough duels with Kuwaiti Zaid Ashkanani put the brakes on his race to catch up, but the 41-year-old veteran didn't let the fast Kuwaiti pilot take third place away from him until the very end despite many attacks.
The specialist driver thus secured his second podium of the current season after finishing second in the opening race in Barcelona. The first two places went to the official Porsche Juniors Thomas Preining (A) and Julien Andlauer (F).
Yelloly closes gap to top of the standings
Van Lagen's teammate Nick Yelloly got off to an equally good start and moved up one place to fifth. In the direct battle with title rival Michael Ammermüller, the Briton was thus ahead from the start.
Even though the leader of the standings stuck to the rear of the 27-year-old, Yelloly fended off all the German's attacking attempts and crossed the finish line in fifth place. Thanks to twelve more points, the gap to the top of the standings is now just three points.
Although his drivers failed to score their third win of the season, the team boss is satisfied.
Alex Fach: "The results from Jaap and Nick are really great. Especially after the somewhat sobering qualifying, we're all the more pleased about this result. We're very happy that Jaap was able to end his dry spell and stand on the podium again. Nick managed to finish ahead of Ammermüller. The two points he gained are extremely important for the championship and could be decisive in the end."
