Fabio Scherer: Reaching for first points

WHILE Nico Müller's aim at the second DTM weekend in Lausitz is to maintain his lead in the standings, Fabio Scherer is expecting his first points. Most recently, the rookie came close. For the first time in the eventful history of the DTM since 1984, there will be a double header, i.e. two races within one week at the same venue. In Formula 1, this was already the case in 2020 at Spielberg and Silverstone.

While for Nico Müller it's all about maintaining the lead in the standings, Fabio Scherer is expecting his first points. On the first of the two race weekends at the Lausitzring, as two weeks earlier at Spa-Francorchamps, not much was missing for this.

Such things can happen
The two races on the Lausitzring short circuit left him with mixed feelings. In the Audi RS 5 DTM fielded by the Belgian customer team WRT, the Engelberger finished 15th in the first race on Saturday after a collision that was not his fault.

In the second round on Sunday, the DTM rookie supported by Stobag and ATS Bandings Systems was just 0.25 seconds short of his first championship point.

Fabio Scherer: "I went into the first race with a good feeling. Unfortunately, my teammate hit me so badly in Turn 4 that I spun. Things like that can happen in racing. I'm sorry that I turned Robert Kubica during my chase. I have to accept the drive-through penalty for that."

Although there are only 16 drivers in the 2020 DTM, the advance into the top 10 is no easier than usual.

Fifth fastest lap
In Sunday's race, the youngest Swiss in the 2020 DTM field at 21 was again involved in a situation in the early stages that cost him places.

Fabio Scherer: "But that wasn't the only problem. The race pace was only right with the second set of tires, so I was able to make up positions. It's a shame that it wasn't enough to score the first point. But the fifth-fastest race lap gives me confidence."

Useful experience
So Scherer is optimistically tackling his second DTM weekend at the Lausitzring, this time on the long circuit (4.570 km).

Fabio Scherer: "For me as a rookie, it's an advantage that we're racing at the same place again because the experience gap is smaller than on a new track. In the second half of the race on Sunday, we also proved what is possible when everything fits. I want to build on that and then finally score my first points next weekend."

Live on SAT.1 and MySports2
Free TV station SAT.1 will broadcast both races live as usual (Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m.) in German-speaking countries.

In Switzerland, the qualifiers (from 10.35 a.m.) and the races (from 1.10 p.m.) can also be followed on pay-TV channel MySports2, with both also available in later recordings on MySport1.
