The highlights of race 2 at Zolder illustrate how it was possible for Fabio Scherer to advance to fifth place and then successfully defend it.
Fabio Scherer crossed the finish line in fifth place in Sunday's race at Zolder, scoring his first ten points in the DTM. The relief for the 21-year-old from Engelberg was great after a couple of character-building weekends.
Fabio Scherer: "I am very happy and would like to thank my team and everyone who believes in me. Finally, everything fell into place for once, and racing luck was also on my side. It was a hard piece of work."
You needed a lot of patience before you finally scored your first points. What was that like for you?
Fabio Scherer: "That's right. And it took not only time but also nerves. I knew we could do it. But the gaps in the DTM are extremely close. Everything has to fit so that you can finish in the points as a rookie. The relief that we finally scored points was balm on the wounds."
In his first DTM season in 2014, Nico Müller also "only" managed a fifth place as the best and only top ten result in ten rounds at the time.
Fabio Scherer: "I didn't know that at all. And that shows once again that we racing drivers do our own thing. I rarely look left or right. A few former rivals from our Formula 3 days are knocking on the door of Formula 1 at the moment, but I'm not comparing myself with them. The starting position is different for everyone. Some are lucky enough to get into a development program. I'm trying to do it my way."
The DTM is back in Zolder this weekend. What are your expectations?
Fabio Scherer: "The weather forecast promises better weather than last weekend. After the experiences we had here and at the Nürburgring, I'm hoping for dry conditions. I started from the very back in both races at Zolder. We definitely want to avoid that this weekend. And in dry conditions we should also succeed. We'll see about everything else then. In racing, anything is possible. Last Sunday is the best example of that. We were in the right place at the right time."
You didn't even return to Switzerland from Belgium because of Corona. How did you pass the time?
"I've been doing sports. You can do that very well anywhere. And there's no danger of catching Corona. I also went karting once to train my reflexes. And I also spent time receiving congratulations and answering e-mails. I was very pleased with the positive feedback. I hope I can satisfy my fans again this weekend."
It's DTM time again this weekend. For Nico Müller in the Audi #51, it's all about increasing his points advantage over Audi colleague René Rast #33, who won twice at Zolder 1.
