The video shows the highlights from the first of the two International GT Open races in Spa. In keeping with the rollercoaster course in the Belgian Ardennes, joy and sorrow were close together for Emil Frey Racing at the third meeting of the season for this racing series.
After a terrific victory by Norbert Siedler and Mikael Grenier in Saturday's race, which ended behind the safety car as heavy rain set in, Albert Costa Balboa and Giacomo Altoè had to retire their Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO early on Sunday while leading the race with brake problems. In the first race, the Spaniard and the Italian swam to the finish in fourth place.
Still the best team
For the Austrian and the Canadian, who only finished the second race in ninth place after a 30-second handicap at the pit stop, this was the second consecutive victory in Saturday's race. Emil Frey Racing also secured its fourth triumph in now six races - an impressive achievement considering the time handicaps imposed on each winning team.
After the two Belgian races, the drivers lost the lead in the championship but are still within striking distance of the top of the standings with one (Siedler/Grenier) and three points (Costa Balboa/Altoè) respectively. In the team standings, Emil Frey Racing has occupied first intermediate place since the start of the season. The next two races will be held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg (A) on July 13-14, 2019.
Victories for Adrian Amstutz and Niki Leutwiler
As drivers, the two fast Gentleman Drivers Adrian Amstutz and Niki Leutwiler kept the Swiss flag flying high in Belgium. His excursion into the International GT Open was crowned by Blancpain-Am champion Amstutz, who took turns at the wheel of another Lamborghini with Finnish pro Patrik Kujala, with victory in the Pro-Am class in the first race and third place in the second race.
Niki Leutwiler achieved the same in the new GT Open Cup Europe launched in 2019 for Am and Pro-Am teams/drivers with various sports cars below the high technical level in the International GT Open. The reigning GT4 Euro Series champion prevailed over all competitors in the first race with the 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 MY entered by TFT Racing for PZ Oberer Zürichsee and climbed onto the podium in third place the other day. The 58-year-old Zurich native leads this new championship after two events so far.
