It's uncertain when the young woman from Aargau will be strapping herself into a sports car again - but it's definitely her long-term goal.
Two years ago, Ekaterina Lüscher was the Swiss karting runner-up in Super Mini, after which she switched to OK Junior. The 13-year-old from Aargau with Ukrainian roots on her mother's side started her second season in this category in August with a total triumph in 7 Laghi - three race wins including pole position and fastest race lap, which earned her a maximum of 75 points.
Since then, she has been at the top of the table, with defending champion Elio Sperandio closing the gap to five points with better race weekends in Wohlen and Mirecourt.
Under observation
Between the second and third SKM runs, the young lady had a special experience: at the invitation of KTM, she was allowed to test drive a car for the first time on September 9 at the Red Bull Ring with special permission from the circuit operators.
The contact came about through her father Bruno, who is acquainted with KTM boss Michael Wölfling. The Austrian has been watching the talented teenager for a long time and now offered her a test day.
First experience
Patrick Friesacher, who completed a GP season with Minardi in 2005, acted as a prominent instructor. KTM factory rider Reini Kofler also gave the young Swiss rider valuable tips.
At her side, Ekaterina got to know the Red Bull Ring in a KTM X-Bow before getting behind the wheel herself: first in the integrated driving camp, then on the GP circuit.
There's no question that she got to grips with the standard sports car (360 hp, 550 kilograms) without, of course, testing its limits. She had previously only driven a car in a private parking lot and at the go-kart track.
Ekaterina Lüscher: "It was an extremely good experience. I was allowed to drive for a long time, and of course it was a lot of fun. Although an H-shift was new to me, everything went well. It was instructive to gain my first experience with a car. I thank everyone who made this possible for me."
Step by step
Before she starts thinking about her future in automotive racing, the district school student (in Muri AG) is concentrating on her education and karting. In November, she could become the first Swiss karting champion since Cyndie Allemann in 1999 and 2000.
Ekaterina Lüscher: "I don't know what is possible because of Corona and the school and where I will be in two years. My goal is to get better and better and to do everything that comes my way."
