After around two and a half years of development and about 1,000 hours on the test bench, the new DTM turbo engine for the Audi RS 5 is ready for its first outing at Hockenheim on May 4. Nico Müller will be the only Swiss DTM driver to experience this new touring car generation in competition.
Less weight and more power
The compact four-cylinder turbo engine with gasoline direct injection (TFSI) weighs only 85 kilograms, almost half as much as the previous DTM naturally aspirated V8 engine. This reduced the curb weight of the Audi RS 5 DTM to less than 1,000 kilograms. The power-to-weight ratio is now around 1.6 kilograms per horsepower.
Two senior engineers from Audi Motorsport explain details
In the video, Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development, and Stefan Dreyer, Head of Powertrain Development, describe the challenge of designing and developing this new power unit and what can now be expected on the race track.
