The highlights show how first Aegerter and after him Lüthi were close to the top 15, while a great fight took place at the top for a long time.
The 2020 Moto2 World Championship is already history after Sunday's race at the Portimão circuit. Fantastic weather throughout the weekend provided the appropriate setting for the title decision. The new world champion is Enea Bastianini from Italy, the Australian Remy Gardner celebrated the first victory.
Both Swiss in the rear midfield
Having joined NTS RW Racing GP from the Netherlands at short notice, Dominique Aegerter also wanted to make a good impression once again. But like compatriot Tom Lüthi, who in 16th place clearly missed out on the final points finish by 2.8 seconds, he did not succeed.
The 30-year-old motorcycle professional from Rohrbach in the canton of Bern arrived with high expectations, especially since he already knew the mountain-and-valley course not far from the Algarve coast in southern Portugal, unlike most of his competitors. The NTS bike and the team were also not new to him.
The race day also started promisingly from his point of view. The 14th place in the warm-up increased his hopes of being able to fight his way forward from 22nd on the grid among 29 riders - two positions ahead of Lüthi - in the final showdown.
No confidence in the motorcycle
But after a good start, Aegerter was soon unable to keep up with the high pace of the competition. Slightly annoyed, he explained afterwards why he could not meet expectations.
Dominique Aegerter: "We had to contend with unusual difficulties. Above all, there was a lack of braking stability in the corner entry. That was also mainly the cause of some scary moments when I almost crashed several times. Of course, that had a negative effect on my confidence for the front."
No more unnecessary risk
Aegerter therefore slowed down a bit and rode cautiously until the end in order to regain some confidence. Because he failed to do so, he slipped to penultimate place among all the classified riders.
And so, unlike teammate Bo Bendsneyder (13th), he was unable to score any further championship points for himself and the team.
Dominique Aegerter: "It's a shame, but once again I enjoyed working with RW Racing and NTS. A big thank you to everyone who made it possible for me to ride for them again on the last GP weekend. Let's see, maybe in the future there will be such an opportunity again. I would be very happy about it."
