The BMW R 18 is a model in the cruiser segment. It is based on the R 5 from 1936.
The cruiser in old-fashioned style is powered by a two-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 1802 cubic centimeters. It transmits 91 hp to the rear wheel via the open cardan shaft. Peak power is reached at 4750 rpm. Between 2000 and 4000 rpm, over 150 Nm of torque is permanently available.
Electronically adjustable chassis
BMW likes to cite the 1936 R 5 as a role model. The engine of the R 18 hangs in a classic double-loop tubular steel frame, and an electronically adjustable chassis was deliberately omitted.
Suspension is provided by a telescopic fork and a directly controlled central shock absorber with travel-dependent damping and adjustable preload. The 49-millimeter standpipes are covered with fork tubes. A double disc brake at the front and a single disc brake at the rear are responsible for deceleration.
Hill start assist is available as an option
The R 18 is modern with three riding modes: Rain, Rock and Roll. Automatic stability control is also on board. Optional extras include a reversing aid and a hill-start assist system, as well as the paint finish with classic double trim line.
Special seats from Mustang Seats
In addition to the standard model, BMW will also release an exclusive "First Edition" for the market launch. The design of the new model is also intended to invite customizing. The accessories program itself lists two design collections with aluminum milled parts from Roland Sands Design right from the start.
Mustang Seats from the USA contributes handmade seats and bench seats. Alternative exhaust systems were created in collaboration with Vance & Hines.
