Majority on the Board of Management against
Many riders, officials and OC members are also unsettled. With so many unpredictable factors, the risk of financial failure is simply too great for the VBG. After weighing the pros and cons, the board of the VBG therefore decided in a vote to cancel this year's Gurnigelrennen.
The Bernese would have been happy to host the last remaining round of the Swiss Mountain Championship, which had been completely cancelled, and would certainly have made many athletes and motorsport fans happy. But not at any price.
Goodbye September 2021
The 51st National Hillclimb Race on the Gurnigel will not take place until September 11 and 12, 2021 in the Gantrisch region. As AutoSprintCH already reported online, there will then be three race heats again for the first time, if the schedule on Sunday permits.
In addition, the organizers will use the time for further innovations and improvements to make the race at the gates of Bern once again a people's festival.
Only Arosa and Bernina
As a result, only the Arosa ClassicCar on the first and the Bernina GT on the third weekend of September are still on the provisional schedule as hill climbs in Switzerland. Both events are reserved for historic vehicles.
Their organizers can wait until the summer to make a decision. Since many foreigners always start on the Bernina, travel restrictions may be the big handicap.
Another hill climb near Switzerland
In Germany, almost all hill climbs have now been canceled. This includes the Mickhausen hill climb in southern Bavaria, which is popular with Swiss drivers and spectators. Although only planned for the first weekend in October, the risk is too great.
The French are planning a mountain championship starting in August that will still consist of five races. One of the races would be Turckheim-Trois Epis near Colmar in Alsace. If it actually comes about on September 5/6, there will certainly be some Swiss at the start there as well.
