AVL: Driverless over the Red Bull Ring 🎥

Tim Heinemann took his seat in the AVL driving simulator at AVL's Graz headquarters to steer the DTM Electric Demo Car prepared by Schaeffler around the Red Bull Ring from a distance of 82 kilometers. The simulator, developed by AVL, allowed the 23-year-old race driver to get feedback on parameters such as handling and stability of the vehicle without being at the wheel himself or even in the cockpit.
The driving simulator runs based on the AVL racing software, which represents the real race car in a virtual model.
Development of series vehicles of tomorrow
Ellen Lohr, ex-racing driver and Director Motorsport at AVL: "Motorsport has been the platform for innovation for AVL Racing for more than 20 years. We transfer the know-how we generate through our involvement in various racing series around the world to the development of production vehicles for future generations of mobility."
Equal opportunities through Balance of Performance
AVL technologies are already being used in the "Balance-of-Performance" creation of the DTM. The BoP is a regulation that brings the different vehicles within a racing series to a performance level and thus ensures equal opportunities. For this purpose, the driving dynamics software AVL VSMTM Race is used in the DTM, which works in the simulation with purely virtual vehicle models as well as virtual drivers.
Virtual vehicle dynamics testing and ADAS development
High-volume car manufacturers also rely on AVL solutions in vehicle development. Simulators and software from the Graz-based company are used in the development of production vehicles - for example in the form of virtual vehicle dynamics tests, ADAS development and system integration projects.
In addition, AVL Racing puts together customized simulators and software for its customers and takes care of setup and commissioning.
