Audi R8 Cup: Good debut for Lucas Mauron

Lucas Ayrton Mauron crowned his debut in the one-make cup with the Audi R8 GT4 cars at Assen (NL) with two second-place finishes. The St. Gallen native had to fight hard for this, especially in the first race. Rounds 5 and 6 of the Audi Sport Seyffarth R8 LMS Cup were contested on the 4.5-kilometer [...]

The Audi field on the grid for race 1. Just like a few weeks ago in the DTM, a limited number of spectators were admitted to the huge grandstands.

Rounds 5 and 6 of the Audi Sport Seyffarth R8 LMS Cup were held at the 4.5-kilometer TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands. The popular GAMMA Racing Days are one of the few events where fans get to see automobile and motorcycle racing as well as the Superkarts on the same day - as permitted in limited numbers at the DTM.

Detour from the DTM Trophy to the R8 Cup
Lucas Ayrton Mauron was the first Swiss to take part in the current season of this sports car cup. The St. Gallen native is familiar with the Audi R8 LMS GT4 from the DTM Trophy newly launched in 2020.

Due to the rather poor classification of the Audi, the 22-year-old has not yet been able to draw much attention to himself there, although he is the fastest representative of the Ingolstadt team so far.

No bank robbers, but the best of race 1 on the podium (from left): Sophie Hofmann (winner Am classification), Lucas Ayrton Mauron (2nd), Maximilian Paul (1st and best Junior) and Kris Heidorn.

Rewarded race to catch up
However, with 2nd place on the grid, last year's Lamborghini GT3 driver (Silver Cup winner at Silverstone) put an exclamation mark on the privately organized Cup with uniform GT4 cars even before the first race.

Leading soon after the start, the Swiss with Brazilian roots was initially able to fend off the attacking pole setter Kris Heidorn before the German turned him over. Mauron fell far behind, but managed to catch up with the leading group again in his chase, also thanks to a safety car period.

At the restart, Mauron first attacked his two front runners without compromise before also grabbing Heidorn, who had meanwhile dropped back to second place. The newcomer was only unable to threaten Maximilian Paul, who also races in the ADAC GT Masters.

Identical and centrally fielded GT4 sports cars are used in the Audi R8 Cup. Lucas Mauron was thus able to show off his driving skills without a BoP handicap.

Better second than a penalty
In the second race, Paul immediately took the lead ahead of Lucas Ayrton Mauron, who had started third. During the first kilometers, he was able to keep up before the leader slightly pulled away from him.

Mauron in second and Heidorn in third also drove safely around the track in their respective positions in the early stages and maintained them unchallenged to the finish. The Swiss could live well with the two second places.

Lucas Ayrton Mauron: "With my good start I was able to gain a place directly. But Max was very strong from the start, so he was able to build up a lead. I was able to catch up in parts until I received a caution for the track limits. Because I didn't want to risk a time penalty, I was a bit more cautious after that. I thought my first participation in the Audi R8 Cup was great and would love to come back."

Of the four rookies at the Assen race, Lucas Ayrton Mauron (far right) was by far the best and, at 22, also the youngest.
