Starting from the tenth and final row of the grid, Dominique Aegerter put in an impressive performance in the third race of the season at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin/Texas, where he finished third on the Moto2 podium in 2014. The 28-year-old from Rohrbach fought his way through the field to eventually finish in the top 15 for the first time this season.
A funny weekend
The 14th place in his 200th GP race also meant the first points for the still young project of the Ticino team Forward Racing with the Italian noble brand MV Agusta. Afterwards, the Bernese rider spoke of a "strange weekend".
Dominique Aegerter: "On Friday we tried out new parts in practice. On Saturday, the third practice session literally fell through. In addition, there was an unsolvable technical problem in the short qualifying session, which is why we had to start from the very back. But I had a good start, felt very comfortable and was able to fight my way to the front."
Proud of the first points with MV Agusta
After a flawless ride, this resulted in the first two World Championship points. Domi was almost as happy about this as Tom Lüthi was about his 17th GP victory.
Dominique Aegerter: "I'm even a bit proud to have given MV Agusta its first points on its return to Grand Prix racing after 42 years. That was our goal here. I can also live reasonably well with our 27-second gap to the winning time. We can take a lot away from this race."
Motivated for European races
After three races overseas, the championship kicks off in Europe with the Gran Premio de Espana in Jerez on May 5.
Dominique Aegerter: "It's really motivating that both sides - Forward Racing and the MV Agusta engineers - are fully behind this project. So I can hardly wait for the next race. Following the Jerez GP, a test will certainly help us to make further progress. Sometimes we are not so far away from the others, but for now I am happy about the outcome of the US weekend. A big thanks to the whole team and all the sponsors for their support!"
