On May 13, 1950, 21 drivers started the first Grand Prix in Formula 1 history at Silverstone. Twelve crossed the finish line after 70 laps (329 kilometers). Until then, the premier class of motorsport had not yet been awarded a world championship title.

Six races plus Indy
As the first winner and also world champion (see Video), the Italian Giuseppe Farina went down in history in an Alfa Romeo. At the time, the season consisted of just six Grand Prix races (England and Europe, Monaco, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Italy) and the Indianapolis 500.

The Italian Farina won the first F1 World Championship race.

The Indy 500, which was dominated by the Americans, was part of the world championship eleven times until 1960. After that, the pure Formula 1 racing cars and drivers were among themselves until today.

Delayed anniversary season
To mark the 70th anniversary, former and current world champions are organizing a Video messageĀ to the fans. They would like to thank them for their seven decades of loyalty, which is currently being put to the test. The 2020 anniversary season will not begin before the first weekend in July in Austria. The government still has the final say here.

In addition, the FIA has created a poster with all previous world champions hidden under helmets.

33 drivers have made it into the FIA Hall of Fame as Formula 1 World Champions.
