Born in Aigle on October 31, 1988, the Vaudois was practically born with the virus. His grandfather Georges Gachnang was a well-known figure in the 1960s. The senior, who is still busy today, even competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Together with his brother, Gachnang designed several racing cars called Cegga. The most famous are a Cegga-Maserati F1 and a sports prototype. These can still be seen today from time to time at historic events with Gachnang at the wheel.
Promotion of Red Bull
Grandson Sébastien Buemi began his career as a six-year-old in karting. Shortly after taking up motor racing, Red Bull included him in its development program. With their help, Buemi went through virtually all the racing car formulas with success.
In 2009, Red Bull hoisted him into Formula 1 with Toro Rosso. Until 2011, he was the last Swiss to contest a total of 55 Formula 1 races. Buemi scored points in every season with the Toro Rosso Ferrari.
His best finishes were two seventh places in 2009. Although he had to vacate his cockpit at the end of 2011, he remains associated with Formula 1 and Red Bull to this day as a test and simulator driver.
On the way to the second WEC title
Seb" has been driving for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) since 2012. In 2014, he won the world championship title with them. This year Buemi also achieved his biggest career goal after Formula 1, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the year-spanning 2018/19 WEC season, he is well on his way to clinching the WEC title for a second time, with the only serious competition currently coming from the second Toyota.
Record man in Formula E
In FIA Formula E, the jubilarian is a man of the first hour and the most successful driver ever. In 2016, he won the championship with e.dams-Renault. Next December, he will tackle his sixth Formula E season with the same team, which now works for Renault-Allianz partner Nissan.
