Unimog
Never before have vehicles worldwide managed a climb to such great heights as the two Unimogs.

The team was to install a system of four emergency radio units at various high altitude camps on the volcanic mountain. This system should improve safety for both climbers and scientists.

World height record for wheeled vehicles
After the expedition team reached the Amistad altitude camp at 6100 meters with both Unimog U 5023s and set up the fourth emergency radio unit there, the team turned its attention to another milestone - the world altitude record for wheeled vehicles.

This was achieved with one of the two Unimogs at an altitude of 6694 meters. Never before had vehicles worldwide managed a climb to such great heights.

Unimog
To add more weight to the front for climbing, this Unimog was fitted with a bulky tire.

Modifications for the U 5023
The expedition was supported by Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks with two modified Unimog U 5023 of the current generation. These transported the expedition team and the necessary equipment to the extreme altitude on the volcano.

Both Unimogs were prepared with special tires, powerful winches and special bodies for variable center-of-gravity taring by specialists from the museum, bodybuilder AS Söder and engineers from Unimog Development.
