Based on the historic crossing by Sir Chay Blyth and John Ridgeway in 1966, this race involves rowing from the Canary Island of La Gomera to Antigua in 35 to 90 days. For the first time, a Swiss team is also taking part.
Launched yesterday
28 teams set sail yesterday with their rowing boat. They can expect a tough battle against the elements, over a million rowing strokes and over a million calories consumed in what is probably the toughest race in the world. For the first time, there will also be Swiss participants. The four young men met during their military service. The idea of crossing the Atlantic with muscle power fascinated the friends and so they founded the Swiss Mocean Team. They will spend between 35 and 90 days on the open ocean. They will row alternately every two hours, 24 hours a day.
Challenge meets Charity
Participation is financed by sponsors, but no prize money beckons the winners of the race. The money left over after the Challenge will be donated by the Swiss Mocean Team to a Romanian children's home. Seat is the main sponsor of the Swiss Mocean Team. It is not only Seat that has taken notice of the Swiss Mocean Team. Swiss television is also attracted by the extraordinary story and is filming a documentary about the team, which will be broadcast in spring 2018.
