Over a period of two months, the project teams in the design studios in Weissach and San Francisco jointly created designs and finally fleshed them out in a concept. The film shows the genesis and the ideas behind it.
Sophisticated fantasy
The name of the fantasy spaceship is "Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter". While in the classic design process of a series-produced vehicle, legal requirements regulate creative freedom, this project opened up new degrees of freedom.
At the same time, the Style Porsche team also faced new challenges, because the purely virtual representation was demanding. On the screen, the spaceship can only be seen in two dimensions; classic production vehicles are shown in three dimensions and physically. In addition, the spaceships in the film are usually shown dynamically and are only visible for a brief moment - so the design has to be convincing within seconds and create a recognition effect.
Michael Mauer, Head of Style Porsche at Porsche AG: "The design of the spaceship is coherently integrated into the Star Wars film world and at the same time shows clear analogies to the typical Porsche design language and proportions. The basic shape of the cabin, which tapers toward the rear, and a strongly pronounced topography from the flyline of the cockpit to the turbines create visual parallels to the iconic design of the 911 or Taycan. The very compact layout represents dynamism and agility and emphasizes the cited Porsche design features."
Extraordinary inspiration
This collaboration has provided a great opportunity to combine the design language of Porsche and Star Wars, emphasizes the vice president and executive creative director at Lucasfilm.
Doug Chiang: "Personally, I found the project a creative challenge and an extraordinary inspiration. It was an exciting task to incorporate Porsche's style into the world of Star Wars and develop an iconic new spaceship that could exist both in reality and in the film universe."
Fitting for the launch of the Taycan
The cooperation with Star Wars was a perfect fit for the launch of the all-electric Porsche Taycan, says the head of marketing at Porsche.
Kjell Gruner: "The design teams have combined the different worlds of Porsche and Star Wars, giving fans of both brands a very special gift. That's why we presented the new Taycan at the film premiere in Los Angeles."
