After the 4S and Turbo, the Stuttgart-based sports car maker is expanding its Taycan model range with the Turbo S. AutoSprintCH tested the top model of the all-electric sports car in the most extreme conditions in the far north.
At minus 39 degrees Celsius, the Porsche Taycan 4s and Turbo S showed their strengths in Finland.
Power galore with 560 kW and 1050 Nm
Driving an electric sports car of the caliber of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S with a brute output of up to 460 kW (761 hp) and a gigantic torque of 1050 Nm on snow and ice is in principle a challenge of a special kind. When temperatures then drop to as low as minus 39 degrees Celsius, another aggravating component is added.
Heating the battery architecture
The Taycan Turbo S loses none of its performance even in such conditions. The 4-millimeter spikes give the 2.3-ton Stromer a good grip. This allows it to demonstrate its enormous potential even in wintry conditions.
On dry roads, the Taycan Turbo S manages the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds - and at least ten times in succession.
The festival of motorsport fans in Zell am See offered thrilling action to the enthusiastic spectators.
Five driving modes are available
Although the Tesla Model S is a tad faster (2.6 seconds), it can call up this performance much less often. In the Taycan, the motors on both axles are controlled completely independently of each other. This feels like having two gas pedals. Five driving modes (Normal, Sport, Sport+, Range and Individual) are available.
Air intakes influence aerodynamics
In terms of proportions, the 4.96-meter Taycan is positioned between the 911 and the Panamera. The low-slung front is dominated by the 4-point LED matrix headlights and the side air intakes in front of the front wheels (air curtains), which maximize aerodynamics.
The seating position is low and perfect for those drivers who like to feel with the "popometer". In the interior, almost all mechanical buttons have been replaced by digital ones.
System voltage of 800 volts
The batteries are housed in the vehicle floor, keeping the center of gravity low. The 93.4 kWh storage depot weighs just under 630 kilograms. The Taycan is the first production vehicle to operate with a system voltage of 800 volts.
Compared with the usual 400-volt technology, this significantly reduces charging times. The maximum charging power is 270 kW, which means that the Taycan can be supplied with energy for a range of up to 100 kilometers in just around five minutes at an ultra-fast 150 kW charging station. The batteries are 80 percent charged again in just under 22 minutes.
The Turbo S is priced from 237,500 Swiss francs. This is 42,600 francs more than the 680-hp Turbo. The entry-level Taycan 4S costs from 135,700 francs.
More than 16,000 fans were eager to experience the Porsche Parade on ice and snow
Classic and modern in Zell am See
In front of a picturesque backdrop and around 16,000 fans, the second edition of the GP Ice Race in Zell am See took place. Racing and rally vehicles from all eras of classic and modern motorsport gathered for the GP Ice Race in Zell am See. Audi, BMW, Skoda, Volkswagen and especially Porsche presented classic and modern automotive icons.
Skijoring with winning car Dakar Rally
Aksel Lund Svindal didn't miss out on the fun and used a Dakar Rally winning car, a Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 4×4, as a towing vehicle for skijoring. And Neel Jani showed how to handle the all-electric and studded Porsche Taycan in winter conditions.
Neel Jani: "It's unusually quiet to hear only the scraping sound of the tires as the 761-hp, electrically powered Porsche Taycan picks up speed over the artificial ice track."
But here too, as in Finland, the Stuttgart native stayed cleanly on track.
