Porsche: Through the hall at 165 km/h 🎥
WORLD RECORD WITH TAYCAN U.S. racing driver Leh Keen accelerated a Porsche Taycan Turbo S to 165.1 km/h in an exhibition hall in New Orleans. In doing so, he pulverized the world speed record in an enclosed building. The record attempt in New Orleans, which was accompanied by music and confirmed by independent experts, was subject to strict rules.
The Guinness World Record for the fastest measured speed of a vehicle inside a building was previously 138.4 km/h.
Tougher rules
The rules for a new record attempt were extensive: Leh Keen had to accelerate from a standstill in the building and also come to a standstill again.
There was no flying start, no safety net, and no open gates at the end in case of insufficient braking distance. For good reason, the previous record had stood for seven years.
Taycan Turbo S as a good choice
Nevertheless, the American was full of confidence. He needed a car with good traction and equally outstanding acceleration and braking power.
The choice fell on the all-electric Taycan Turbo S - with 1050 Nm and 560 kW (761 hp), all-wheel drive, powerful ceramic brakes and acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds.
Like on ice
Choosing the right building turned out to be another challenge. This is where the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans in the US state of Louisiana came into play. At just under 93,000 square meters, the exhibition hall advertises the largest contiguous area of its kind in the United States - ideal for the experiment.
The problem: As in many other halls, the polished concrete floor resembled mirror-like ice, especially at higher speeds. The standard road tires were therefore preheated for safety reasons.
Exciting thoughtlessness
When it finally came to the record attempt, one run was enough. He used the launch control for this.
Leh Keen: "The feeling of speed in a building is something completely different - the wall was coming at me at breakneck speed. The brakes did their job with flying colors."
He did not pay attention to the speed while driving.
Leh Keen: "So I was both surprised and relieved to beat the record by such a big margin. It was really exciting! I'm very grateful to Porsche that they believed in me. 165 km/h in an exhibition hall - what was I thinking?".
