GMC: This is how the new Hummer EV drives 🎥
A WHOLE KERL Its origins are military, but it has long since mutated into a lifestyle accessory among General Motors' SUVs. We're talking about the Hummer, which is now returning to the market as the GMC Hummer EV. GMC is launching the new Hummer EV as a representative of the 2022 model year. Ten years ago, General [...]
GMC is launching the new Hummer EV as a representative of the 2022 model year.
Ten years ago, General Motors wound up the brand because it no longer fit in with the times. The company now wants to make up for this shortcoming with an all-electric drive system.
Hummer's first new model, now under the umbrella of its former sister brand GMC, is a four-door flatbed truck with the model designation EV.
Exclusively in white at market launch
The GMC Hummer EV is most striking for its boxy body, which is available in the exclusively available "Edition 1" version painted white at market launch. Later, the e-mobile will be offered in all colors of the rainbow, and an SUV variant with a station wagon rear is to follow.
Camera systems on the underside of the vehicle
Underneath the body is an all-electric vehicle platform that goes by the name of "Ultium". The numerous special features, some of which are optional, include all-wheel steering that enables the EV to drive diagonally at an angle of up to ten degrees in crab steering, air suspension with extreme lift, steel plates as underride protection and camera systems on the underside of the vehicle.
Up to 1015 hp power is available on request
Depending on the version, the Hummer is powered by two or three electric motors; total output is 466 kW (634 hp) with two motors and climbs to 597 kW (811 hp) to 746 kW (1014 hp) in the three-motor variants.
A range of 400 to 550 kilometers is allegedly possible, depending on the version. Then there is an extended forced break to suck up the power. That will be enough for metropolitan traffic in Detroit and Los Angeles, but extended off-road trips are not advisable. And there is no longer any talk of military operations either.
Sound mix of streetcar and Corvette
The purely electric hunk is supposed to catapult from 0 to 100 km/h in around three seconds. The acoustics of a streetcar combined with the acceleration of a Corvette: That's about how you can imagine a highly scaled RC model.
Incidentally, the body and interior are full of creative details. These include a transparent roof whose four individual segments can be stowed in the front trunk, a closed light strip at the front and a cabin that is as spacious as it is futuristically appointed.
Entry-level model coming in early 2024
All this comes at a price. The First Edition, which is scheduled for delivery in a year, costs $112,595 excluding VAT. The less expensive models are to follow gradually, and the entry-level model, currently priced at just under $80,000, won't be available until spring 2024.
Tesla and Mercedes-Benz also at the start
The GM Hummer EV is not the only top-of-the-line off-road electric car: When it hits showrooms, the Tesla Cybertruck and the all-electric G-Model from Mercedes-Benz will also be vying for the favor of a clientele that not only pays a premium for its responsibility and climate commitment, but also wants to document it in a way that cannot be overlooked.
