The 41-year-old will play a key role in developing the electric strategy in the racing sector. In addition, Mattias Ekström will be the official driver of Cupra's first all-electric touring car. The new cooperation will be celebrated at the joint trade fair appearance at the upcoming IAA in Frankfurt.
Two visionaries and pioneers
With the Cupra e-Racer, the Spanish sports car brand is taking on a pioneering role in racing for electric vehicles. Ekström has also broken new ground in the past. Born in Falun in 1978, the Swede is a two-time DTM champion (until 2017 he was team-mate of Nico Müller in Audi Sport Team Abt), 2016 FIA Rallycross World Champion in his own team and three-time winner of the Race of Champions. With his vast experience, "Eki" is considered one of the most versatile racing drivers in the world.
Mathias Ekström: "The collaboration is a logical step for me. After a long racing career in which I have been involved with all types of combustion engines, it is now time for a switch to electric racing. Cupra has been an absolute pioneer in this segment since the brand was founded. I am looking forward to working with the highly motivated and committed team on its further development."
First electric touring car
In 2018, Cupra presented the e-Racer, the world's first purely electrically powered racing touring car. With its continuous output of 300 kW (408 hp) and up to 500 kW (680 hp) peak power, it reaches a top speed of 270 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in just 8.2 seconds.
World premiere at the IAA
The future of Cupra also looks electric on the road. The silhouette of the first fully electric concept car has already been published. An initial online presentation will follow in a few days and it will finally celebrate its live world premiere at the IAA. This high-performance vehicle combines the characteristics of a four-door crossover with the stature of an SUV and the elegance of a sporty coupé.
