Each back door and side panel from the Bentley Mulliner "Collections" is handcrafted from a block of American Walnut or American Cherry wood.
The concept for 3D-machined wood was first shown in the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
Each component from a block of wood
The components made of three-dimensional wood do not use veneers, which are typically used for the front skirt and door edge protection.
To obtain the three-dimensional surface, skilled workers carve the wood with a multi-axis milling machine with a permissible dimensional deviation of 0.1 millimeter - less than the thickness of a human hair.
An open-pore varnish is then applied, allowing the natural color and texture of the wood to show through.
Positive reactions at the Geneva Motor Show
Brett Boydell, Bentley's head of interior design for the Flying Spur, says: "Three-dimensional wood is one of the interior design elements we have taken from the EXP 10 Speed 6.
The process of milling a geometric three-dimensional diamond shape in solid wood was so well received in Geneva that we now offer it for the series."
