In Switzerland, 350,000 children and young people are affected by a rare disease. Worldwide, around 8,000 rare diseases are known and only just five percent of them have been researched. One third of the children in university children's hospitals in Switzerland suffer from rare diseases.
Support for those affected
The "Förderverein für Kinder mit seltenen Krankheiten (KMSK)" (Support Association for Children with Rare Diseases), founded in 2014, invites affected families to free family events, supports them financially for therapies, time off, mobility and more, and aims to raise public awareness of this issue.
Taster ride with a Ferrari
Managing director of the association, Manuela Stier, for example, organized a Sunday brunch at the autobau Erlebniswelt in Romanshorn. 25 families came, and owner Fredy Lienhard personally took the opportunity to chauffeur the family members around the company's own track in a dark blue Ferrari. The children were also able to test the driving simulator and demonstrate their own driving skills on the MiniCar racetrack.
Participation of many sponsors
The event was made possible with the help of autobau Erlebniswelt and various sponsors (Otsuka Pharmaceutical, brack.ch, Mosterei Möhl AA, Rössli Beck). Manuela Stier: "We thank all the sponsors, helpers and the autobau Erlebniswelt team for their hospitality. Hard to believe, but they all did volunteer work, just terrific!"
