Volkswagen: First kilometers with camouflaged ID.7 🎥
HIGHER SEGMENT Sedan instead of SUV. The new top model in the E-family, the ID.7, will soon make its debut. We drove a prototype with a range of up to 700 kilometers in advance.
So now it's seven: Many people consider it a lucky number, and at Volkswagen it stands for a move up into the upper mid-range. The ID.7, which celebrates its world premiere on April 17, is moving to the top of the electric model range and will roll onto the markets in Europe and China in the fall.
Another mid-range model
The ID.7 is the sixth model to use the Modular E-Drive Box (MEB), and its shape clearly goes against the trend, which now primarily favors electric SUVs in this segment. Instead, VW presents its top e-model as a hatchback. According to those responsible in Wolfsburg, the prototype, which is still hidden under a (thoroughly attractive) camouflage, is intended to complement the "Passat Variant as a further mid-range model in the program," but its dimensions already project it into the next higher segment.
As much space as in the luxury class
The ID.7 measures a full 4.96 meters in length, and thanks to the generous wheelbase of 2.96 meters, the interior is as spacious as in the luxury class. The 532-liter trunk under the tailgate is suitable for long journeys, and thanks to the favorable cd value of around 0.23, the interior is already pleasantly quiet in the prototype.
The drive was newly developed
The good aerodynamics also contribute to the range. Volkswagen promises between 615 and 700 kilometers of driving between two charging breaks for the Pro and Pro S drive versions. The developers placed the energy storage unit in the floor of the car between the two axles, which supplies 77 kWh or 86 kWh depending on the version.
For the first time, the ID 7 uses a newly developed drive system with a trio of electric motor, two-stage single-speed transmission and pulse inverter to optimize efficiency. The pulse inverter ensures thermal stability, controls the energy flow and optimizes consumption.
Comfortable and very maneuverable
The ID 7 was developed as a touring sedan and features the enhanced DCC adaptive chassis control system. The person behind the steering wheel can select the driving profiles Eco, Comfort and Sport or an individual mode. During a first short drive, VW's seven-series demonstrated its comfort characteristics. The Comfort setting in particular delivers what it promises. At the same time, the sedan can also be quite agile, with the Driving Dynamics Manager bringing stability into play. At the same time, the ID.7 is surprisingly agile despite its dimensions.
Sound system with 14 speakers
The interior is generously spacious. The driver looks at minimalist displays that play only a secondary role, because thanks to the head-up display all the information is in the field of vision so that the view can remain focused on the road. In terms of feel-good atmosphere, the Wolfsburg creatives gave the ID.7 ambient lighting that includes a total of ten colors. Thirty colors are also available for an additional charge. Entertainment is provided by an optional 700-watt sound system from Harman Kardon with 14 speakers.
The ambience is rounded off by newly developed seats that offer pleasant ventilation or an equally welcome massage function. The seats meet the parameters of the Healthy Back Campaign.
Protection of electronic helpers
With its numerous electronic helpers, the ID.7 is a rolling computer and must therefore be particularly protected against malicious attacks from the network. To prevent such hostile intrusions, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has developed a corresponding certification. The focus here is primarily on control units and the software that accesses vehicle functions. The ID.7 was one of the first Volkswagen models to be developed in accordance with these regulations and successfully tested and certified by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority.
