Audi: SQ5 Sportback TDI can also run diesel 🎥

DYNAMIC OPTICS With the Sportback coupe versions, Audi is expanding the Q5 model series with a body style that is also known as a CUV - Crossover Utility Vehicle. We drove the top version SQ5 Sportback TDI.

The new Sportback version of the SQ5 Sportback TDI of the Four Rings presents itself much more dynamically.

People rubbed their eyes when Audi decided to offer the SQ5 as the first S model also with diesel. The reason was clear: CO2 emissions. It was less clear whether this would be successful. Now, at the latest after the test drives with the new SQ5 Sportback, we can confirm that this was not a bad idea.

After all, the 4.69-meter-long and 1.89-meter-wide car weighs 2085 kilograms and its height of 1.63 meters offers a lot of resistance to the wind. That's where a diesel has to get to work.

The base price of 90,000 francs rose to more than 116,000 francs in the test vehicle due to options.

More dynamics with sporty body shape
With its coupe-SUV silhouette, the new Sportback version is much more dynamic. In addition, the brand-typical single-frame radiator grille in honeycomb design and the diffuser with the four large exhaust tailpipes stand out from the outside. Despite its coupe shape, however, there is plenty of room for five people in the SQ5 Sportback - and a luggage compartment volume of between 510 and 1480 liters, depending on the recline position.

Actuator provides artificial sports sound
The 3-liter V6 turbodiesel operates at very low revs: It delivers its maximum torque of 700 Nm at 1750 rpm and maximum output of 341 hp at 3800 rpm. This allows the car to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, and north of the country's border 250 km/h is once permitted. Since the diesel basically doesn't provide exciting sound, an actuator in the exhaust system helps out, which also produces a distinctly throaty sound depending on the driving mode.

Good ride comfort with dynamics program
The diesel is a perfect fit for this vehicle. Along with elasticity comes good responsiveness, which is thanks to the electrically driven compressor. In addition, the 48-volt mild hybrid technology allows sailing with the engine switched off. This helps keep consumption modest. We averaged 9.7 liters per 100 kilometers on our test drives.

Thanks to the adaptive air suspension, the SQ5 offers good ride comfort and plenty of safety reserves in all dynamic programs. Camera- and radar-equipped, the car always keeps an eye on the expansive dimensions and warns the driver if necessary. In agglomeration traffic, the adaptive cruise control masters every driving situation without driver intervention.
