Renault: R5 as a diamond for the anniversary 🎥
UNIKAT Renault has teamed up with French designer Pierre Gonalons for the 50th anniversary of the Renault 5 to reinvent the cult model of the 1970s and 1980s in a free interpretation.
The result of the collaboration between Renault Design Colours & Trims and designer Pierre Gonalons was the Renault 5 Diamond, an electrically powered show car designed to combine the worlds of interior design and the automobile. The reinvented R5 represents the artist's vision of the car of the future.
Pierre Gonalons: "The Renault 5 embodies a poppy and contemporary lifestyle. With the Renault 5 Diamond, I pay tribute to its revolutionary design and at the same time I have transferred the shapes and colors of my universe to the automotive world."

Lines of the original from 1972
In designing the car, the designer drew inspiration from the decorative arts, particularly the art of jewelry. The show car retains the unmistakable lines of the original, which first rolled off the production line in 1972. However, Gonalons deliberately detached important add-on parts from their surroundings, enlarged them and modified their design.
The body paint consists of three layers: golden pigments on a pink background, covered with matte paint that creates a variety of effects ranging from golden in the sun lines to blue tones in the dark.
Window regulator and gearshift as balls
The interior is decidedly minimalist. The door handles, the window regulators and the gearshift lever are designed in the form of spheres, whose mix of materials exudes a touch of Parisian flair. The somewhat overkill steering wheel is made of marble on carbon. Despite the unusual shape, it is said to be characterized by great ease of use.
In addition to the all-electric drive, the Renault 5 Diamond features a fingerprint scanner for unlocking the doors and a sequential gear selector. Three digital displays modeled on classic dials provide information on speed, battery charge and time as a tribute to traditional watchmaking.
