Classic cars: good business in the middle class
Auction TOFFEN Almost 100 vehicles went under the hammer at the spring auction in Toffen. Almost every second one was sold. A wide range of vehicles were up for auction in the Bernese Mittelland: from the almost 100-year-old Peugeot Type 172 Quadrilette (1922) to the Jaguar X-Type 3.0 V6 from 2001. A wide range of vehicles was up for auction in the Bernese Mittelland: from the almost 100-year-old Peugeot Type 172 Quadrilette (1922) to the Jaguar X-Type 3.0 V6 from 2001. Both found their buyers: the British car sold for 4,000 francs, while the Peugeot was the subject of one of the few hot bidding wars - the hammer fell at 23,000 francs, just under twice the average estimate.
44 vehicles sold directly, 22 subject to reservation
Very clear trend on this hot Saturday in Toffen: The price top league had a very hard time finding a buyer. The highest bid of the day was for a BMW Z8 Roadster. However, the 170,000 francs offered were well below the estimated price of a quarter of a million, so the auctioneer refused to accept the bid. Also not sold was the Jaguar XK 120 Autenrieth convertible from 1951, for which a buyer wanted to pay 90,000 Swiss francs - just under half of the middle estimate. There was also great reluctance to buy the BMW 2002 tii, the Mercedes 230 SL Pagoda or other jewels with a star - the buyers did not have enough money. The same was true for the Riley duo offered in a package (RMC 2.5 liter Roadster and RMA 1.5 liter Saloon): No buying interest. The top seller was therefore the Cadillac 370A V12 Convertible Coupé. The starting bid of 100,000 francs still climbed to 130,000, so the 1931-built car was sold with reservations. Two Porsches followed: a 914/6 GT from 1971 for 85,000 Swiss francs and a 356 B from 1963, for which the hammer fell at 75,000 Swiss francs.
Car sold well under 10 000 francs
The auctioneer knocked down just under two dozen cars for 10,000 francs or less. Among them everyday cars of the 80s such as Audi 90 (1000 francs), Chevrolette Corvette C4 from 1988 (5500 francs) or Mercedes 280 E W124 from 1981 (6000 francs). But also automotive treasures like the Hillman Super Minx Sport GTL (1966, 4750 francs), Kaiser Jeep CJ-6 (1968, 7000 francs) or the DKW 3=6 F93 from 1956 for 10 000 francs. The four-cylinder Porsche 924 S from 1987 achieved 5000 francs.
Lovers pieces also with two wheels
In addition to the four-wheelers, around a dozen two-wheeled exhibits also went under the hammer. Here, the same trend applied as with the cars: In the lower price range, in this case three to just under four figures, the vehicles sold like freshly sliced bread. Puch Maxi, Kreidler Florett, Jawa 125 or Solex S 3800 quickly found their lovers. With the Moto Guzzi V65 C, the buyer probably landed a bargain for 1200 francs. To refresh the memory of the military time with the bidding on a Condor A350 (3250 francs) or A 580-I (4750 francs) was already a little more expensive. A Triumph T 140 E Bonneville was sold for 12,000 francs under reserve, a BMW R90S received a bid of 13,000 francs - and remained standing.
