SPECTACLE ON TUESDAY On July 24, the popular Zurich summer event Indianapolis will take place for the 16th time in Oerlikon at the open wheel race track. Who says it? After the successful Formula E Grand Prix and now the magical Indianapolis in Oerlikon with historic racing cars, Zurich can directly be called a Swiss motorsport city...
Unlike Formula E, spectators will also be able to hear and smell the vehicles. The racing engines from days long gone, the smell of sausages and burnt castor oil, and packed grandstands will create a magical atmosphere on the open Oerlikon cycling track directly opposite Messe Zürich.
Handpicked vehicles
Organizer Georg Kaufmann has once again succeeded in mobilizing more than 50 hand-picked and historic racing vehicles. All of them delicacies with two, three and four wheels, some of which represent values in the double-digit millions.
From 4 p.m., the vehicles can be admired by all spectators in the open paddock. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., divided into nine fields, they will turn spectacular demo laps in the concrete oval built in 1912 with a length of 330 meters and two curves banked at 44.5 degrees.
Organizer Georg Kaufmann emphasizes that this is not a race.
Georg Kaufmann: "Safety has absolutely top priority. But the guys still step on the gas pretty hard and give everyone a unique goosebump feeling."
With Marc Surer and Fredy Amweg
A special highlight will undoubtedly be the appearance of ex-Formula 1 driver and Formula 2 European champion Marc Surer and mountain king Fredy Amweg. Both will rock the oval in authentic Formula 2 racing cars from the seventies. In the case of Amweg, who will celebrate his 69th birthday the following day, it will be his own Amweg BMW from 1977.
Crowd favorites are the brute Indianapolis race cars from the roaring 1930s, which put their special stamp on the event. They are joined by legendary former GP racers such as Georg Kaufmann's 1956 Maserati 250F.
Two-wheeler and three-wheeler fans will also get their money's worth in Oerlikon. Sidecar teams and many racing machines from manufacturers such as Norton, Motosacoche, Indian, Harley Davidson, Matchless, Kreidler and BSA will be on the starting line.
Bike racing and racing engines
As the forecast promises good weather, there should be nothing to prevent the event from taking place on Tuesday, July 24. Alternate date would be next Thursday, July 26. In case of doubt, information can be obtained from the homepage of the Oerlikon Indianapolis racecourse or or by phone 044 311 25 61.
The event with catering and open paddock lasts from 4 to 10 pm. The entrance fee of CHF 20 will be donated in full to the IG offene Rennbahn Oerlikon.
