Under the flag "bf Classic Helvetia" (team boss Bruno Flückiger, former Formula 1 engineer) three vehicles were entered. The team Mario Illien/Daniel Mauerhofer drove the history-steeped Jaguar XK 120 (Jg.1950) from Emil Frey Classics AG in Safenwil to 55th place overall out of more than 230 vehicles and 8th place in its class.
This made them the best team from Switzerland. At the same time, they won the special "Top of Speed" classification in their class at the Niederöblarn aerodrome.
David Brabham comeback
Ex-GP driver David Brabham, son of racing legend Jack Brabham and former winner at Le Mans, made his "racing comeback". Together with Georg Treusch he drove the 6.2 liter and 340 hp Chrysler 300 of his friend Bruno Flückiger. At the GP Gröbming he additionally pilots a BMW M1 from the former Procar series.
Bruno Flückiger not only acted as team manager and coordinator during the event, but also competed together with Caroline Hoi on his own Auto Union Coupé, which was very popular with the public. Despite technical problems, they reached the finish in Gröbming after three days in the first half of the overall classification.
Unwanted headlines after crossing the finish line
The "bf Classic Helvetia" team also looked after Austria's ex-Minister of Justice Dr. Dieter Böhmdorfer with son Florian in the Jaguar Mk2. The team caused an unplanned excitement after crossing the finish line (20th place overall). During the photo shoot, their Jaguar caught fire, causing major damage and making big, unplanned headlines in the media in Austria.
The Ennstal-Classic was a three-day event with the prologue on Thursday (about 400 km), the marathon (over 500 km) on Friday and the grand finale at the Zenith Grand Prix in Gröbming on Saturday.
With more than 100,000 spectators along the track and over 20,000 visitors at the Grand Prix in Gröbming, it is one of the most important classic events in Europe. The international field of participants consisted of several nations, with many motorsport legends as well as celebrities from politics and culture.
