Initial ideas for the design and versatile character of the Qashqai were developed in 2002 as part of a development process that was actually intended to produce the new edition of the Nissan Almera. The creative team then started all over again. The new design should reflect what drivers really want and embody the Nissan brand values of innovation and enthusiasm for everyone, according to the Japanese.

In February 2007, the first Qashqai was launched on the market and was an immediate success. Before the year was out, Nissan had sold almost 100,000 units in Europe. In the meantime, more than 2.3 million units have been sold throughout Europe, making the Qashqai the best-selling crossover on the continent. In addition, the Qashqai has received more than 80 awards and has won a "Car of the Year" award 19 times.

"When it made its debut in 2007, the Qashqai was simply unique," recalls Paul Willcox, Chairman of Nissan Europe. "It is still the number one crossover today because it has remained true to its ideals and we have continuously developed it further through innovations and new technologies."

This process of constant improvement can be seen, for example, in the introduction of the Intelligent Around View Monitor for 360-degree all-round visibility. The system was introduced in 2010 as part of a comprehensive model upgrade. In 2014, the parking assistant was added with the launch of the second model generation.
