Damian Schmid took second place at the Eurocup in Bern. Steve Rolle and Florent Lacilla from Fribourg in 4th and 5th place show the high level of vocational training in the Swiss automotive industry.
Qualification for the World Championship
14 young automotive mechatronics engineers from Switzerland, Germany, Austria, South Tyrol and Luxembourg competed in the Eurocup in Bern to qualify for WorldSkills. The best Swiss qualified for the World Skills Championships. These take place every two years, next time from August 22 to 27, 2019 in Kazan (Russia).
Concentration under great time pressure
The Eurocup at the Mobilcity in Bern was a tough one: the range of tasks ranged from engine management and vehicle electrics to troubleshooting and calibrating the steering and chassis. There were six tasks to complete. The professionals only had one hour each to complete the tasks.
Additional difficulty for the man from Eastern Switzerland
From a Swiss perspective, 19-year-old Damian Schmid from Nesslau SG was best able to deal with the challenging problems. This was despite the fact that the man from eastern Switzerland had an additional difficulty to overcome: Damian Schmid is an automotive mechatronics technician specializing in commercial vehicles, but the Eurocup, like the WorldSkills next August, was all about cars. Skill is skill.
