The Pikes Peak mountain race has been held near Colorado Springs in the Rocky Mountains since 1916 and covers a distance of just under 20 kilometers. The absolute record has been held by record-breaking rally world champion Sébastien Loeb since 2013 with an 800-hp Peugeot 208 T16 in 8:13.878.
Volkswagen Motorsport is targeting the best time for electric cars on June 24, 2018. This was set by New Zealander Rhys Millen in the 2016 race in 8:57.118.
After the Germans first announced Romain Dumas, a Swiss by choice, as the driver, they are now showing the first pictures of the model and also revealing the name of the futuristic racing car: I.D. R Pikes Peak. There are no more details yet.
Ambassador for electric I.D. family
The all-wheel-drive electric sports car is intended to combine its ambassadorial role for the future electric I.D. family with VW's sportiest product range, the R GmbH models. At the same time, it is said to be a first step towards more intensive cooperation between Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Motorsport in the future.
The Volkswagen brand plans to offer more than 20 pure new electric vehicles by 2025. Production of the first series model of the I.D. family is scheduled to start at the end of 2019 in Zwickau, Saxony.
Board member for development Dr. Frank Welsch: "We want to be at the forefront of electric mobility with Volkswagen and the I.D. family. The I.D. R Pikes Peak and participation in the world's most famous mountain race not only has symbolic significance for this, but is also a valuable acid test for the development of electric cars in general."
